After weeks of build up, and a frustrating run of false starts thanks to the weather, the big off is finally here. In this episode the drills start rolling on the barley and the rape, and we run through the huge effort of getting four drills, the sprayers and all the seed and water moving at once. We also get into the fine detail of setting up an 18 metre drill, where every coulter now works independently, and the extra nerves that come with covering so much ground so fast. It is far from plain sailing. We walk the emerging oilseed rape and find it being hammered by flea beetle, a real worry and a reminder of why so many gave up growing it, and we hit a run of breakdowns that leaves us grateful for a good parts department and a kind helping hand. There is a frustrating issue with short filled chemical containers to sort out too. Away from the fields, the new yard is nearly finished, the combines are being serviced and tucked away for winter, and we get a tour of the newly renamed accommodation trailer, now looking rather smart inside. We are right on the eve of the big off. After holding our nerve and waiting for moisture, drilling is about to begin, and as James explains, this is the part of the year that makes him most anxious, more so than harvest, because as much as 60% of next year's yield is decided by getting the drilling right. Back on home soil after the trip to America, it is straight back to reality, jet lag and all, and the focus now is the drilling campaign. In this episode we explain why getting the timing of drilling right is arguably even more important than harvest itself, and sit down to plan the logistics of keeping four drills running. We also take a proper look at Cropwise, the new software we are using to pull all of the farm's scattered data, from satellite imagery and weather stations to yield maps going back to 1999, into a single system, with the ambition of eventually running the whole farm from one screen. It is an idea born on our trip to Brazil, and it could change how we make decisions. On a quiet bank holiday, we take the chance to sit down and be honest about the numbers.
