Tom Perkins from Charles and Dean comes down to talk through two big projects landing this month, battery storage to take the sting out of a runaway electricity bill, and a major upgrade to the grain hospital. We open up the numbers in a way most farms never would. Our electricity across this site alone is now topping £200,000 a year, up from around £100,000 five years ago, a lot of it in standing and capacity charges we simply cannot avoid. So rather than paying that out like rent to the grid, we explain the plan to install a 750 kilowatt battery system and expand our solar, how it could pay for itself in just a couple of years, and why financing it rather than draining the overdraft makes sense. We get into the honest detail of how asset finance, retrospective funding and the government growth guarantee scheme actually work, and how to avoid the trap of borrowing your way out of trouble. We also look over the £320,000 grain hospital upgrade and the new colour sorter on its way from Denmark, and get ready to take the trailer to the LAMMA show in January. From a runaway energy bill to the real mechanics of farm finance, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. But the real story of this episode is the sheer scale of the numbers behind a farm this size. We open the books a little, as the main fertiliser bill lands at just over £1 million, up from around £600,000 just five years ago, followed by a £274,000 chemical bill on the same day. We explain why payments that big go through the bank rather than online, how the grain we sold for cash flow left the account within 25 minutes to pay for the fertiliser, and why, with the market still falling, selling early turned out to be the right call. There is also a good look at how we are digitalising the whole transport operation, moving the lorry defect checks and servicing records onto an app, and a reassuring update on that worrying grain store panel. From a rolling autumn day to the million pound realities of modern farming, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. With the crops looking a real picture after the rain, attention turns to the big autumn clear up, and in this episode we put a rather expensive new gadget to the test. We bought a powerful turbine blower from the States, 14,000 cubic feet a minute coming out at around 200 miles an hour, to speed up the long, dusty job of blowing down the combines, which currently takes the team the best part of four or five days a machine. We drag a couple out of the shed to try it, and have an honest, no holds barred debate about whether, at £9,000, it is actually worth the money. We also walk the emerging wheat and rape, which have transformed in just a few days, and use a vivid real world example to explain why blowing machinery down matters so much for controlling weeds like black grass between farms. Elsewhere there is progress on the accommodation trailer, the fertiliser tanks are being filled, and after another break in, more repairs to the security. We finish with an honest word ahead of the budget, and the frustrating saga of trying to sort a life assurance policy. From a transatlantic piece of kit to the jobs that fill a wet week, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. After one of the driest autumns on record, the rain has finally arrived, 21mm in a day, and with the drilling done it is a rare moment to enjoy. The crops are a real picture, and the oilseed rape in particular, which caused so much worry earlier in the year, has turned into a genuine game changer. In this episode we walk the emerging wheat, barley and rape, including the hybrid wheat trial, and are honestly delighted with how it looks corner to corner. The big story, though, is electricity. Our total bill has now topped £200,000 a year, with a single meter seeing a £54,000 jump, and a huge share of it is not even the power we use but standing and capacity charges, which has us deeply regretting ever moving to half hourly meters. We explain the drastic steps we are now weighing up, from battery storage and a much bigger export cap to disconnecting outlying farms entirely, and why we are reinvesting in a second colour sorter in the grain hospital to become more efficient per kilowatt. We also walk the fields scarred by the water main and archaeological works, where the damage could last decades, look over some old farm buildings we hope to convert, and finish with an honest word on a grain market that stubbornly keeps falling. From the first green shoots to the fight against spiralling costs, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
